THE VILLAGES ASTRONOMY CLUB MEETING OCTOBER 19, 2010

The pre-meeting DVD presentation was "Macro and Micro Scale of the Universe".

The monthly meeting was called to order by Burt Salk president.

President Burt Salk discussed the following issues:

The efforts of the executive committee to provide shorter and quicker meetings; pre-meeting DVD series; finding homes for telescoopes donated to the club by fund raising; outreach programs to schools; running two Starry, Starry Nights each year; joint efforts with Alachua and Plantation astronomy clubs; running elections each year not just appointing people to offices; the need for upcoming elections and people to participate in the club; its not necessary for the vice president to ascend to the presidency the next year; Other nominations needed for the coming year.

Nominations for the 2010-2011 club year are:

President: Jeff Tonge

Vice-President: needed

Treasurer: Bill Santos

Web Master: Jerry Kosarko

Media Contact: Burt Salk

Star Party coordination & visual: Doug Landmann

Secretary: Nancy Renna and Mary Hall

The next Executive Meeting will be Nov. 4, 2010 at Santiago Restaurant at 9:30 am.  All are invited to attend.

Starry Starry Night is now Nov. 9, 2010.  It was changed due to conflicting dates with other clubs and the presences of the moon.

We are going to have Nov. 11 and Nov. 18, 2010 as "Boardwalk Under the Stars" at Sumter Landing near the Lilghthouse Restaurant.  We expect to have 2-4 telescopes for public viewing.  These nights are also vendor nights at the square and we expect to see more traffic and hope to sell more raffle tickets for the club's 4 donated scopes.

The LX200, a club telescope which is for sale, will be used for post meeting viewing tonight after the regular meeting.

The raffle drawing for the donated telescopes will take place around March 2011 after the two Starry Nights and the Tech Expo and Outdoor Expo. are over.  Once the raffle is performed the scopes are personally delivered and the new winners are instructed on how to set up and use their new scopes.

Treasurer's report was given by Bill Santos.  The new amount included the money obtained for the ETX telescope sold by the club and the 50-50 drawing.  There are problems with the banks now demanding minimum balances and service charges.  It may be possible to transfer the clubs' bank account to a credit union.

If anyone wants a club shirt they should see Nancy Reena.

It was noted that the club has been asked to donate $100.00 to the Moffit Center or individuals can buy a brick for $100.00.

Jeff Tonge presented "What's Up There".  Mr. Tonge informed the club that he was using Auto Star, a program provided by Meade when purchasing a telescope.  Also, many telescopes are controlled by the program.

Our main club presentation was "Astrophotography" by Doug Landmann.

The 50-50 drawing was held.

New schedule program for the November 2010 meeting will be Dr. Ken Kremer's program on "The Future of NASA".

There being no more business to conduct, the meeting was adjourned to the tennis court area for post meeting telescope viewing of the heavens with club president Burt Salk.

Respectfully submitted,

Mary E. Hall

Recording Secretary
